“Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary,
pure and holy, tried and true.
With thanksgiving, I’ll be a living
sanctuary for you.”

My freshman year at Oklahoma State University was filled with “get to know you games,” so strangers I now call best friends and I could get to know one another. After we learned first names and hometowns, we wanted to go deeper.

We often played a game called “What’s Your Favorite Color?” This game consists of a series of questions, the first being, “What is your favorite color and why?” The third question in this game is, “What is your favorite place and why?” My go to answer for this question is the sanctuary at First Christian Church of Edmond. It’s a home away from home. It’s where I was given my first opportunity to sing on stage and where I was baptized. It’s the place that has the best hiding spots for a game of hide-and-seek during a church lock-in. It’s the place we celebrate love through weddings, and the same place we come together in a time of loss and celebration of life through funerals. It’s the place I sit on Sunday mornings to hear truth and wisdom. It’s the place that is a frequent destination on my faith journey.

The word “sanctuary” is defined as, “a place of refuge and safety.” The sanctuary at First Christian Church of Edmond is just that - a place we can come together and feel safe.

This week I challenge you to answer the question, “What is your favorite place and why?” Where is your sanctuary? Where is your place of refuge and safety where you can be one with God?

I invite you to use the lyrics to the song “Sanctuary” as your daily prayer for this week:

“Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary,
pure and holy, tried and true.
With thanksgiving, I’ll be a living
sanctuary for you.”
