Matthew 2:1-12 - Click to read full passage
My daughter, Alix had a baby girl last week and made me a grandfather for the first time. As a new grandfather, it's been my job to show her pictures to everyone who has seen me.
Norah wasn't unexpected. We've been expecting her for months. Her due date was Thanksgiving, so when she was born the day before it was right on schedule. What was unexpected, though, is how life changing her birth has already been. She's less than a week old and my life already seems divided into pre-Norah and post-Norah eras.
Having a newborn in the family makes celebrating the birth of Jesus all the more special this year. Like Norah, Jesus’ birth was not a surprise, but what a life changing experience it was! It changed the lives of the wise men, traveling far to bring him gifts. It also changed the life of everyone who has been touched by the knowledge of Jesus, and the experience of the risen Christ, for over two thousand years. It was such an enormous event that we now divide our calendar into BC and AD eras, based on the birth of Jesus.
There is no better way to emphasize the life-changing aspect of Advent than to have a baby become part of your life. And Norah is just as cute as any of those nativity scene babies! Just ask, I will be happy to show you her pictures.
Lord, keep us mindful during this season of Advent of the beauty, grace, and salvation you brought to the world through Jesus. Change our lives anew each day, as we prepare to celebrate his birth. Amen.
