When trying to define a family, phases such as common ancestry, related groups and familiar bonds come to mind. A basic unit consisting of parents and their children, considered as a group. When trying to define a church family, a group of caring compassionate adults and children who join together to celebrate, comfort and encourage one another in Christ seems more accurate.

This was what we were looking for when Scott, Michele, Beth Anne and I came to First Christian Church Edmond. A place for our family to be a part of a bigger family. A place our children could build strong bonds with not only other children, but also with caring adults who model for them strength, trust and accountability. A place where we could form friendships based on our core belief of Christ’s love and call to welcome all and faithfully serve each other. A place where, like any family, we may not all agree, but we embrace each other’s unique ideas and perspectives and celebrate our individual gifts and talents. A place where we can study His word and value each other’s thoughts and interpretations and encourage a sense of wonder. Where love among our family members is truly the tie that binds.

After 18 years, two baby boys, two graduations, one marriage and countless ministry meetings, Sunday school studies, VBS songs and kitchen cleanups, I’m so very grateful for the family we have found at First Christian Church Edmond. It is our strength and support, our laughter and service. Our best friends are part of our family. We’re blessed to even have family be a part of our family. It is our home. Just as God planned.

“The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other's life.”
