December 25 - Rev. Chris Shorow

Christmas has arrived.  Hallelujah!

The presents have been opened and we celebrate the gifts.  Did you get what you asked for?  Was anything unexpected?  We celebrate the joy that comes with this season as we spend time with family, loved ones, memories and food.

One of the gifts Beth and I gave our children this Christmas is a big trip to England this summer.  Not something you can play with or enjoy right now, but it does provide anticipation, and sometimes that can be as fun as the event itself. Planning the trip, studying the destinations, making reservations to do all the things you want to do—that makes for some great anticipation.

The same is true for Christmas. I like to think of Christmas more as a journey than a destination.  You know what I mean?  Decorating, buying gifts, baking, parties, and planning get-togethers—those are the fun things we anticipate about Christmas.  Yet after Christmas we often feel let down.  What do we have to look forward to now?  What are we to do with the precious gift of the Savior?

The Good News is the journey has just begun.  We are not alone.  Now we have a Savior who walks with us and gives us strength and hope for the future.  I like God’s words from Isaiah 41:9-10:  “You are my servant, I have chosen you and not cast you off.  Do not fear, for I am with you, do not be afraid, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.”  We, who once walked in darkness, now have a shining light to guide us.

It is a lifelong journey, a journey of faith that takes courage, strength and learning.  We begin the journey God calls us to take with this Christmas gift.  The journey that brings hope, peace, love and joy to our world is unending, but we know with Jesus Christ the victory is won.

May the blessings and joy of this Christmas day be with you throughout the new year!
