Luke 2: 10-11 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.”
Sometimes a couple is expecting to hear the news “You are going to have a baby,” and sometimes it is a bit of a surprise. After hearing that we were not expecting, Jim gave me a puppy as an early Christmas present, since that was the second thing I most wanted. And a few weeks later, we got the exciting news that the thing we most wanted, a baby, was indeed also going to join the family.
That was the best gift ever – or so we thought at the time. Mike was a fourth generation first son and almost 50 years ago, that was the best gift we could have ever asked for.
In the last few weeks, however, we have discovered an even better gift for a family – a life restored. With no warning, Mike had a heart attack, and thankfully, had surgery, 3 stents, and is restored to full health. If you talk with him or see him in action, you have no indication he suffered a massive heart attack and was within 30 minutes of dying.
All of this has made me wonder… I wonder how Mary and Joseph really felt when they learned Mary was going to give birth to the Son of God. And I wonder how they would have felt if they had any knowledge or understanding of what their son would endure and what he would mean to the whole world. I am thankful that we do not always know what the future holds, that we can rely on the love of our Heavenly Father. We can trust in that gift under all circumstances. Worrying about the future will not change what happens. We need not be anxious about anything because we can trust in God’s love and peace.
To be given our son’s life a second time is a blessing we did not expect. To receive the love of God and the blessing of His Son in our hearts can only be called THE BEST GIFT EVER! This gift gives us joy and a life devoted to sharing that gift.
Heavenly Father, thank you for the best gift ever, the gift of Your Son and Your unconditional love for us. May we share this gift abundantly.
