December 18, 2016 – Rev. Micah James

In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.’ And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favours!’ - Luke 2:8-14 NRSV

When I look back over all the years of gifts I have received, I don’t remember my best gift ever. Was it my first Cabbage Patch Doll? Or maybe those Trolls of the 90’s? Maybe it was my first Walkman? Or my very first mobile phone?

It’s amazing that each year, full of Oprah’s favorite things, we ask for the next best, greatest thing. Wishing and hoping it will be the best gift ever, only to find a few years down the road it wasn’t exactly as cool as we thought it was.

But not this gift. Not the gift we receive this week. The gift the angels proclaimed. A savior. That is a gift that remains the best gift, year after year after year. A savior is something we always need. A savior is something that is always wanted. A savior is something we never want to return. A savior is the best, no, the greatest gift the world has ever received.

So walk around this week full of joy, love, peace, and hope, because you are getting a gift. The best gift ever.

Giver of Life Abundant, We give you thanks for this gift freely given. Help us to receive it with joy and gladness. Amen.
