Beautiful March Evening - Randle Lee

It was a beautiful March evening, the biggest fundraiser in the community of El Reno, and I had asked someone to join me to have some fun.  I waited on the front steps of the venue, waited for that person to meet me as she had said she would.  After waiting well after the starting time of the event, I realized maybe it was good she didn’t show and now there was no pressure to “entertain” someone and I could fully enjoy the evening.

The Redlands Community College Annual Scholarship Gala was always a great time.  They had great food, games of chance, and ALWAYS a rockin’ live band.  Historically, this night was a night folks in the community planned their whole day around in preparation for before AND after parties.  Needless to say the place was packed and fun was being had by all.

Well into the evening I caught up with an acquaintance, Ronda, who worked in El Reno and was always nice to engage with in conversation.  As we caught up on activities in our lives, she asked if I had a date for the evening.  I explained to her my date had chosen to not show up, but since it would have been a first date, I was somewhat relieved and was having a great time.  She said, “Let me introduce you to someone whose date also did not show up this evening.”  We acrossed the floor of the venue and Ronda tugged on the sleeve of a very animated young lady in the midst of conversation and laughter with a group of folks.  “This is my sister Janell,” Ronda shared with me.  After the typical chit chat we wandered around the venue enjoying some of the games, visited with friends we both knew, and within a few minutes the band struck up their first set.  “Let’s go dance,” Janell said. We danced to almost the entire first set from the band.  Throughout the evening we wandered, we danced, we wandered, and we danced.  As the fourth dance session ended, Janell was ready to wander some more and reached out and grabbed my hand.  As we headed off the dance floor, and with the touch of her hand, I immediately knew Janell was someone I would like to get to know better.

We end up going to an after party at a house that unbeknownst to us, would in the future become the Lee household.  I had my heart healed by this feisty, funny, redhead from Calumet who can drive a tractor, trade commodities, is ambitious, and hold her own in ANY conversation about politics and world events.

That same feisty, funny redhead from Calumet would become my beloved and she and I would embark on a wonderful adventure that is marked every March 10th by the celebration of our anniversary.  For over 15 years we have laughed, loved, and grown our family with the adoption of a feisty, funny, intelligent young lady by the name of Zoey.  But that is a WHOLE ‘nother story.  Her adoption also provided a healing of hearts in our family that was originally blessed by God on the night Janell grabbed my hand on the dance floor and answered a prayer for me.

"Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known." - Jeremiah 33:3 NRSV

Reflection Question: Where have you seen God answer prayer?

Prayer: Sustainer and Surpriser, We give you praise for the many ways you walk with us and surprise us in life. Amen.
